What Will It Take?

Tuesday Barack Obama reached the magic number of 2,119 delegates and sealed his victory in the Democratic presidential primary. So why then would Hillary not concede? It’s just bad form to not admit when you’ve lost. She needs to realize that taking this to the convention will likely have one of two outcomes. It will either split the Party into two polar opposite viewing factions or make Hillary Clinton the pariah of the Democratic Party. She will be the second Joe Lieberman. Taking this fight to the convention in Denver this August will not win her the nomination despite what any of her ardent followers might have said. There are political realities that can’t be ignored.

The party leadership made the choice to not be beholden to the Clinton political machine and made a fair decision about Michigan and Florida. Considering that Hillary Clinton supported the original decision to withhold their delegates from the convention it’s hard to take her seriously about the issue being a moral imperative that they get their voices heard. Their voices not being heard was just ducky for Mrs. Clinton when everyone thought the race would be over by the middle of February. Somehow things changed a bit when she lost one right off the bat.

I’m personally a fan of the come from behind victory but sometimes the “comeback kid” thing doesn’t work and you lose. It’s time for the Clintons to admit defeat and come back into the fold. Obama needs to get rolling for the general election campaign and the Clintons should be out there helping to undo any damage done to Obama during the primary race. The Clintons put on a good campaign but this time they lost. It’s OK, really, you’ll be just fine. People lose elections without losing their minds. You had eight years in the White House. It’s time for a new family in that house.

Many are speculating about whether Obama will ask her to be his running mate. One thing is almost certain. If she doesn’t begin to be conciliatory soon, he will have to look elsewhere. Maybe an Obama-Edwards or Obama-Gore ticket might be the trick to make sure that the GOP doesn’t get another four years in the White House. Whatever the case, it’s time for the Clintons to give up the fight. Save your dignity and read the headlines already. It’s over!
