The fate of the entire population of the world is interconnected. Like it or not that is the way it is. We depend on other nations for our survival and vice-versa. Our continued existence depends on building up a healthy global economy with an eye to the long term health of the planet. Isolationism and protectionism will not solve the problems of the nation economic or otherwise. Americans need to be able to rely on ourselves. As much as people want to try and globalize every issue a nation needs to be self-reliant. As we have seen from things like NAFTA, trade agreements can often do much more harm than good. Ross Perot had it right when he talked about the "giant sucking sound" of jobs leaving the U.S. after the passage of NAFTA. Our leaders have painted us into a corner by focusing so much on international trade and ignoring domestic jobs growth and sound fiscal policy. More...
