A National Healthcare Plan for All

I write this article today, not as a political pundit of any sort. This article is written by someone who has no medical insurance at all. I write this article as an average citizen of the United States of America. I claim to be no one of great importance. I am just someone who knows that there needs to be change in this great country of ours.

It is a known fact that the cost of medical insurance in this country is rising by the day. More and more people are losing their ability to pay for personal health care insurance. I know this to be personally true, A couple of years ago, I had to terminate my personal health care insurance, that I obtained through the “Cobra” plan, from a former employer. That was back in the mid 1990’s. By the time, I had terminated the coverage; the cost had risen so sharply, that I had to cancel the coverage. Because the cost was so great, that I could not continue to pay for the coverage and pay for my other bills as well, I just didn’t make that much money. Conversely, The plan I had was Health Alliance Plan (H.A.P.), which is supposed to be one of the most affordable health insurance companies out there.

When I first started the coverage under the “Cobra” plan, I was paying a little less than $250.00 for a single person and I paid nothing for hospital visits and nothing for doctors visits and a co-pay of $5.00 for prescriptions. Incidentally, I found out later, that this plan was for retirees. I do not know how my boss managed to wrangle that insurance plan out of the credit union that I had it though, it was a army policy, I didn’t ask, and they, my place of employment, didn’t tell. However, over time, the plan was done away with, and a different plan was put into it’s place, one that’s cost was much higher and the coverage was, to be quite frank, worse. I ended up with a co pay for Doctors office visits of $15.00, and a Co pay of $10.00 for prescriptions, I didn’t have a co pay for the Hospital visits luckily, and I was paying more for the mere right to possess the insurance.

My friend there is a serious problem with Nation’s health care system. That problem is greed. While I am fully aware that Doctors have to make a living, there is a distinct difference between making an honest living and robbing people blind in price gouging in health care. This gouging, along with the rising costs of health care insurance is depriving people, of the health care that they so desperately need. I could go on about the gouging that goes on in the health care industry, but that would put this editorial at about 50 pages long. Moreover, before I would finish that, my fingers would fall off from all that typing. Seeing I happen to enjoy the possession of all my fingers intact, I shall refrain.

While I realize that, there are some insurance plans that are just wonderful. I also know that these plans are quite expensive. They are also some that have a wonderfully small price tag attached to them, or are affordable for many, however, when you remove the smoke and mirrors of that plan, the type of coverage is, quite frankly, horribly awful. I shall give you an instance of what I am referring. I used to work for a company based out of the Chicago, Illinois area. That company is now closed, due to being under bid, by another company, in a contract bid. This company offered health care insurance, which at the outset, seemed to be great, however, when you read the details of this insurance, you quickly began to see, that you had bought a lemon, in a manner of speaking. My friends, does it make any sense to have almost $100.00 to be taken out of one’s check weekly, for health care insurance, only to find out, you have to spend almost $500.00 of your own money, before the health insurance you are paying to use, will begin to cover you? This is ridiculous. I would like to meet the person that dreamed up that idiotic fraud, and give him a good piece of my mind.

I realize that there are those who are literally jumping fences to gain access to this country. All to experience what we refer to as “The American Dream”. I also know that there are many people in this country, that were born here, that want to experience, “The American Dream”, I happen to be a part of that group. My question to you is this, how can anyone experience that dream, when you have insurance companies robbing people blind, of the very thing that keeps them from obtaining that dream?

My friends there needs to be a change, This Nation needs a National Health Care plan for everyone. Not just for those who qualify, But for everyone. Not just any run of the mill, second rate Health Care plan, but rather, we need a very high quality health care plan for this country. Our nation’s heath care system is that of a third world country. In addition, our health care insurance industry is that of legalized extortion. The days of robbing people blind of their hard earned money, just to provide second rate health insurance needs to end.

In closing, I am sending an open message to Washington D.C. and to those who are vying at the chance to become the next President of the United States of America. Do not make empty promises to us, we are the American people, you work for us. We want a national health care plan that offers quality coverage. No more smoke, mirrors and empty promises. This nation is the greatest nation in the world. It deserves a Health Care Insurance plan that lives up to that standard. What kind of hypocrites are we, if we tell people that we offer citizenship to this wonderful nation of ours, That we cannot even offer them a health care insurance policy that is worthy of the name of the United States of America? I will answer that question, we would the greatest of hypocrites of the entire world. God help us, if we do not address this issue in a serious manner.

Why Environmentalists are to Blame for Global Warming

By listening to Al Gore, other environmentalists and the media you start to get the impression that the United States is almost solely responsible for Global Warming through it's production of greenhouse gases. Nothing could be farther from the truth. We do, as a nation produce more greenhouse gas on a per capita basis than any other country, but that very fact can be directly attributed to the workings of those same environmentalists who for years have blocked every attempt to generate nuclear power - the only efficient way to generate power on a large enough scale to meet the needs of the world that does not create greenhouse gases.

Let me be clear, "Environmentalists" are the main reason we, as a country, produce so much greenhouse gas on a per capita basis. Because of their 30-year stance (and the lack of political will to go against that stance) against the development of nuclear power in this country we produce almost double the greenhouse gases that we would be producing with a strong nuclear generating capacity.

Approximately 50% of the greenhouse gases produced in the United States are the result of the production of electricity and it is probably just as high or higher in other parts of the world. Nuclear power generates no greenhouse gases and global warming may not even be occurring at this time if the nuclear power industry had been allowed to develop in the United States and around the world as it has in places such as France and Lithuania.

Just think of the billions of tons of Greenhouse gases that would not have been produced if we, as a nation, would have continued to build nuclear power plants instead of the oil, coal and gas powered plants we and the world rely on now for our power. But the environmentalists wouldn't let us and our politicians, ever afraid of losing votes, went blindly along.

Nuclear power is much stronger in Europe with about forty-two percent of their energy produced by nuclear fission. Nuclear generation provides about 17% of world electricity, avoiding the emission of up to 2.3 billion tons of carbon dioxide annually. France produces 76% and Lithuania produces 85.6% of its energy by nuclear fission.(http://infoweb.magi.com/~dwalsh/wfsesr.html)

In the United States, a lot of people and almost all environmentalists are antinuclear because of 3 Mile Island in 1979 and Chernobyl in 1986. However, many experts say that it is a safe, clean, and reliable source of energy as proven by it's long history in France. Nuclear Fission produces no greenhouse gases, but does produce highly toxic radioactive wastes (which can be safely dealt with). (http://www.umich.edu/~gs265/society/greenhouse.htm)

As President, I would immediately call for the United States to embark on a strong nuclear power building program. We have the land upon which to build the power plants (here in California we could throw a half dozen plants in Eastern San Bernardino County alone and no one would ever see them), we have technology that is extremely safe and we have an extremely safe depository for the waste in the Yucca Mountain facility that would be opened very soon if the politicians would quit being politicians and become statesmen and do what is right for the United States and the World.

If we converted almost all of our electrical power generation from oil, coal and natural gas to nuclear we would go a very long way towards lowering our greenhouse gas footprint and show the rest of the world that we will do what must be done to contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas production.

One of the biggest problems facing this country has been it's absolute lack of a comprehensive energy policy. One of the main purposes of a Government should be to plan for the future. Our Government and politicians refuse to do so because all they care about is the next election. The "future" will be the next guy's problem after we are out of office is what they seem to be thinking. We need a comprehensive energy policy in this country that makes good, long-term sense. Not one crafted by environmentalists, the media, big oil and other special interests that is designed solely to garner votes in the next election or contributions to their cause.

For several years now we have listened to some within the business community tell us that America can't compete on a global scale unless they send our jobs overseas where they can be done cheaper. The question becomes, if we don't have good paying jobs here, how can we sustain our own economy? We want to hear from you. Have you lost your job? Have you been forced into a lower wage job due to outsourcing? Has outsourcing been a success for you? Did you end up in a better job?

Tell us your story so we can make sure the politicians see how outsourcing really impacts the workers who are backbone of America. Send your story to stories@reform-america.net
