The Price of Politics

When we all woke up on Tuesday morning most of us had no idea who Rod Blagojevich was but by the end of breakfast we not only knew him as the Governor of Illinois but as the poster child for government corruption. According to statements from the Justice Department based on government wire taps of his phones Governor Blagojevich has been a really bad boy and will likely go to jail for a really long time.

It seems that the good Governor, who has the power to decide who will replace President-elect Barack Obama in the U.S. Senate, has been trying to find out just how much he can get out of making that decision. He has been basically putting the decision out to bid and also trying to trade on some of the other powers of his office. In one recording he was positing that he wanted to get a cabinet position in the Obama administration or possibly an ambassadorship for deciding on someone that might be friendly to the incoming administration. Other tapes had him complaining that the Obama team didn’t seem interested in horse trading with him on the matter and that all he could expect from Obama for the decision was a “thank you”. Such a shame that one would merely get a “thank you” for doing the job one was elected and is paid by the taxpayers to do. What could the world be coming to?

In another example of his trying to work favors for gains, he told the Tribune Group that he would help them in their efforts to sell Wrigley Field if they fired some editors who had been unkind to him in the newspapers. It seems that he wanted to take government manipulation of the press to a whole new level. From the preliminary information given by the Justice Department it seems that the people that the Governor was trying to shake down were not biting.

One thing that has been made clear by representatives of the Justice Department is that despite the investigation being focused in part on activities related to filling the Senate seat vacated by Barack Obama, there is no indication that Obama had any knowledge of or participation in any of Governor Blagojevich’s activities. It seems from some reports that there may have been contact with some Obama staffers at some point but there are also indications that someone from the transition team may have alerted authorities to the possibility of improprieties on the part of Governor Blagojevich.

It is a sad day for American government when such blatant corruption is found but at the same time it is good that the activities have been found out and pulled into the light of day for closer examination. Until the case goes to trial Blagojevich will be free on bond but most of his colleagues have expressed their opinions that he should step aside at least temporarily until such time as he ahs either been convicted or absolved of the charges against him if nothing else than for the integrity of the office he holds. If he is convicted based on the information as it was presented initially by the Justice Department there should be no leniency as his actions appear to be flagrant and completely disregarding of the public trust.
