No News In The World When A Celebrity Dies

Last Thursday Michael Jackson died. It is a loss to the entertainment industry and a generation of fans. Whether you loved him or hated him his impact on the world is undeniable. Sadly though, in his passing he is serving as the great news blackout.

Since his death, nine British embassy workers in Iran were taken and held by the Iranian government, the Associate Director of Duke University’s Center for Health Policy has been arrested for trying to offer his adopted five year old son for sex on the internet and Al Franken was finally declared the winner in the Minnesota race for the U.S. Senate. All of those things should be headline making news but they are being brushed aside to devote hours of coverage to whether or not Michael Jackson’s jackass father will be a part of his children’s lives or whether his will from 2002 is valid.

As a society we have become far too focused on the titillating. We would rather listen to news about sex scandals than hear what our leaders are doing in our name. We just handed Baghdad over to the Iraqi security forces and pulled our troops outside of the city but that is not the lead story on the news. The lead story is some new twist in the saga of the Michael Jackson estate. Our news media should be ashamed of themselves. They are abandoning hard news for tabloid sensationalism and we are playing right along.

People like to complain about the shape of the world but we would rather pay attention to who is currently sleeping with who in Hollywood than how the Senate voted on an appropriations bill that could mean our kids don’t get updated textbooks this year. We are more concerned with Anna Nicole Smith’s breast implants than how repealing the Glass-Steagall Act caused the collapse of our financial system and who precisely was to blame for the decision to repeal it. We are our own worst enemies and for what? Will it impact our lives one iota if Jackson’s kids get the money or if his dad blows it all?

We need to start changing the channel and looking for hard news. We need to turn off TMZ and turn on Jim Lehrer. E! is not a good source for hard news and as John Adams said “Liberty cannot be preserved without general knowledge among the people.” A free society only remains free when it is an informed society. When we choose to ignore those things that actually impact us in favor of titillating stories that have no real bearing on our daily lives we sacrifice a little more of our freedom and independence.

We vote in elections for people we neither know nor understand. We have no real knowledge of their actions in our name. They pass bills we have no knowledge or understanding of and spend the fruits of our labor with utter impunity because we don’t pay attention. It’s not that the information is unavailable. It’s public information. We just would rather hear about whether a man we never had any hope of meeting let alone befriending took too many sleeping pills or just had a bum ticker that was overworked from trying to prepare for a tour his body couldn’t handle. We need to wake up and get our priorities in order before we find our society in shambles because we were too focused on tabloid news to pay attention to the real problems in our world.

Do you sit and yell at the TV when politicians come on? Do you shake your head sadly whenever you see a homeless veteran? Is that all you tend to do?

It's time to put up or shut up America. We all love to talk about how we could do things better or how we would do it if we were in charge. Well, it's time to put your money where your mouth is. If you can think of it, you can write it down. If you can write it down, you can type it. If you can type it, you can e-mail it and if you can e-mail it, you can send it here.

Have You Been Downsized Due to Outsourcing?

For several years now we have listened to some within the business community tell us that America can't compete on a global scale unless they send our jobs overseas where they can be done cheaper. The question becomes, if we don't have good paying jobs here, how can we sustain our own economy? We want to hear from you. Have you lost your job? Have you been forced into a lower wage job due to outsourcing? Has outsourcing been a success for you? Did you end up in a better job?

Tell us your story so we can make sure the politicians see how outsourcing really impacts the workers who are backbone of America. Send your story to stories@reform-america.net
