Does West Virginia Mean Anything to the Larger Election Picture?

For those who follow politics, this election season has been one for the record books. Between the counted-out John McCain who went on to lock up his party’s nomination for all intents and purposes to the epic battle for the Democratic nomination between the first viable woman and the first viable African American to run for the presidency in the history of our nation this has been an historic race. The May 13th West Virginia primary might seem somewhat insignificant to most casual observers but some see an ominous picture for the odds-on favorite for the Democratic nomination Barack Obama.

In recent presidential election history West Virginia has played a significant role in deciding the outcome. No Democrat who has lost West Virginia in the general election has won the presidency in recent history. George H.W. Bush won it in 1988, Bill Clinton won it in 1992 and 1996 and George W. Bush won it in 2000 and 2004. As went West Virginia so went the nation. With the polls closed in West Virginia, the news outlets all reported Hillary Clinton winning West Virginia in a landslide and when the numbers came in they validated the media’s exit polls. With over 90% of the votes counted Barack Obama had lost the race by over 40%. Polls of voters also showed that if Obama were to win the nomination only 35% of Clinton supporters felt that they would vote for Obama in the general election.

So what does this mean for Obama’s chances in November? Is it significant or will West Virginia not be a determining factor in the general election? With Obama being the likely nominee can the Democrats win in November? If Clinton loses will she rally her supporters to elect Obama? Some have speculated that Clinton might not be enthusiastic in her support of Obama in the general election. Some have even suggested that she might try to subtly sabotage his campaign in order to give her a better shot at running and winning in 2012.

It seems that in this historic protracted clash of political titans the drama might not yet be over. Obama seems to be the likely Democratic nominee but Clinton may yet have a significant role to play in the outcome of the general election. Some have suggested a “super ticket” with both Clinton and Obama on it may be the key to victory for the Democrats but most insiders have said both publicly and privately that it is not likely to happen. The rancor of the race may have caused too deep of a divide to mend between the two candidates and many of their supporters could view an alliance as a betrayal by the person they supported. The only thing that is certain is that no matter who wins the nomination they will need the active support of the other to win the White House.

In the end West Virginia may not make or break the November election for either party but the questions raised by the May 13th primary do not appear to bode well for the Democrats. If they cannot mend their fences and heal the wounds inflicted in this contentious primary it becomes likely that the Republicans led by John McCain will have a much easier time winning the White House for another four years.
