Profiling – Is It Necessary To Keep Americans Safe?

On Christmas Americans got another reminder that there are still many people around the world that would love nothing more than to see large numbers of us dead. The would-be bomber of the Christmas Day flight had every intention of killing every passenger on board the flight and as many people on the ground as possible. The sad truth is that if our intelligence agencies had done a better job of sharing information or if the airport security staff had done a better job of recognizing the warning signs Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab would never have stepped foot on an airplane headed for the United States. While unsavory to many had Abdulmutallab been “profiled” he would have been stopped before leaving Africa.

Despite the political incorrectness of saying so there are similarities between various terrorists that cannot be ignored. All of the 9/11 terrorists came from one region of the world, followed the same religion and had been to areas of the world known to be terrorist training grounds. While not all terrorists come from these groups many do and examining all people who meet certain criteria when they step onto airplanes just makes sense. There is a difference between screening all Muslims and screening all passengers who have come from known terror-supporting countries. Anyone coming into the U.S. from certain points of origin should be under closer scrutiny. Additionally anyone coming into the U.S. who has recently been to terror-supporting countries should be looked at more closely.

That being said, it is important to remember that not all terrorists have come from the places in the world known to support terror. Richard Reed the “shoe bomber” came from London. He was however someone who should have been of concern to security officials. He attended a mosque in London that is known for extremism. People who associate with extremists should come under closer scrutiny. If you go to a mosque that preaches jihad then you pose a greater risk to the traveling public than someone who doesn’t. It might not be politically correct to say it but it needs to be said. You are known by the company you keep. If you hang out with people who call for the death of America, you should be looked at by security officials when you decide to travel to America. If you don’t want to be subjected to said scrutiny don’t go to mosques that preach jihad against America. If the Imam in your mosque starts talking about death to non-Muslims it might be a good idea to distance yourself from the mosque because you can rest assured that some intelligence agency is watching them. Aside from that, no sane person calls for the wholesale destruction of other countries. You’re probably better off learning about Allah from someone who’s not crazy.

We need to start looking at things less emotionally and more logically. If people belong to groups that actively seek to do us harm we need to examine them more thoroughly when they are in a position to do harm to Americans. If people don’t want to face the hassles of being considered threats, they need to avoid associating with groups bent on the destruction of America. While not all Muslims are jihadists the vast majority of the terrorists trying to attack America are Muslims. Simply being a Muslim should not be enough to cause security officials to subject someone to invasive searches but it should not be disallowed as a contributing factor to making decisions about who is examined more closely. We need to develop good profiles for potential terrorists based on every known contributing factor and use those profiles to decide who represents a greater threat to the traveling public.

The time for squeamishness is past. We have far more tools that we could be using that we are not to protect Americans. We need to use biometrics and every bit of technology at our disposal to prevent terrorists from getting anywhere near innocent civilians. If that means that some TSA agent knows what I look like under my clothes then so be it. If they can take it so can I. The threats are real. If profiling can keep people safer then we need to profile. If searches need to be more invasive to eliminate the threat of people using their bodies as weapons to kill Americans then we need to have more invasive searches. It may not be the most politically expedient option but people’s lives are at stake.

The terrorists will do anything they can to get to us so we need to have the same level of resolve to stop them. And for the record, anyone who has ever traveled to Israel can tell you American security is nothing next to Israeli security. Our inconveniences are minor. The Israelis don’t mess around when it comes to security. Every person and every bag is searched thoroughly regardless of the ethnicity or religion of the person in question. At thirteen with a Christian tour group from America they searched me from head to toe and looked at every item in my bags. They don’t care if you’re in customs for three hours. They make sure you’re not a threat before you move about in their country or board one of their planes. They put safety first all the time. There has also not been a successful hijacking of an Israeli plane since 1968. That's over 40 years of terror-free flying. El Al doesn't get hijacked because their security is just that good. Just something to think about...

For several years now we have listened to some within the business community tell us that America can't compete on a global scale unless they send our jobs overseas where they can be done cheaper. The question becomes, if we don't have good paying jobs here, how can we sustain our own economy? We want to hear from you. Have you lost your job?
