The Economy and Racism - Does Economic Decline Inevitably Lead to Tension Between Ethnic Groups?: Left of Center View

Racial tension threatens to boil over whenever the line at food court gets too long, so of course the economy and its taking a nose dive has an effect. Angry people spend bushels of time looking for others to blame, and it's just plain easy to do it stereotypically.

The economy sucks right now. We're still shedding jobs like a dog jumping in a pond. There are official signs of recovery, but that doesn't mean folks are getting back to work just yet. The problem is that most of the so called economic indicators look at how the stock market is doing, not how the supermarket is. Check the shelves and look at the expiration dates on things. Remember when they used to pull milk before its expiration date? The lines are longer too. But instead of blaming the suits that cut staff, we tend to take it out on the lone person working the check-out line. Stress and impatience bring out the worst in people, so you don't have to wait in line too long before the ethnicity comes into play as part of the problem for the delay.

Undocumented workers or "Illegals" have been the go-to scapegoats for job losses for decades. Now that things are getting or staying worse, a new culprit is needed to keep the bitch sessions lively. It may have started with ďIllegalsĒ but now unions or affirmative action or preferential hiring practices (which are ok when they work in your favor but just wrong when they work against you) are to blame. While there may be a minute justification for these accusations, it is generally a smoke-screen used to cover the far larger and more sinister cause. But racism everyone understands, while economics are far more complex.

Yes, bad economic situations tend to bring out the worst in us. And yes, racial tension and prejudice certainly qualifies as some of our worst. The problem is that when we as a nation take the easy road and just put a band-aid on the problem it tends to fester and grow. We as a nation are at our best when we stand against adversity and put our differences aside and choose to focus on our similarities. There are plenty of problems facing our little planet and our only hope is to face them together.

The Economy and Racism - Does Economic Decline Inevitably Lead to Tension Between Ethnic Groups?: Right of Center View

Whether the economy is good or bad some people will always fight with one another. Some hates run too deep to try and explain them. Sure when people are broke theyíre more likely to get pissed at other people but when you hate someone enough youíll find a reason to blame them for something no matter how good or bad things are.

What is more important than how good or bad the economy may be is how we deal with people that break the rules regardless of their life circumstance. Liberals want to look at everything as outside influences happening to people to make their lives go in one direction or another. Where is personal responsibility in all of that? Sure, bad stuff happens, that doesnít mean itís suddenly ok to treat people who have nothing to do with the problem crappy for it. Thatís also not to say that sometimes certain groups donít actually make the problems worse as a whole and deserve some measure of blame for the situation.

It seems as if our big problem in this country is not blaming the right people for the problems facing our nation. Each side of the debate has their agenda and in the end neither side is honest with anyone about who is really to blame. Even when we blame the people who run things we forget to blame both sides because we donít want to admit people on our side might be bent and trying to screw us over too.

In this particular debate weíre talking about illegal aliens and whether they are contributing to our bad economy. Truth be told, they are negatively affecting our economy but they are more of a symptom than a cause. The cause of the problem and the people that deserve the blame are the yahoos in Washington that keep passing laws that let the illegal aliens and the people who employ them get away with it.

Letís call it what it is here. Greedy people are screwing the American people over so they can get richer and using illegal aliens to do it. In some ways they can be seen as victims too. They get sold this bill of goods on how great things will be here if they can just get here when thatís a load of crap. If we want things to get better we need to be honest with ourselves and the world. As long as the corrupt politicians have special interests pulling their strings this country will be in trouble. Illegals or no illegals we're screwed if we can't face that simple truth and do something about it.
