Putting More Agents On The Borders - Will It Reduce Illegal Immigration?: Left of Center View

It seems like every election year anti-immigrant activists find a way to make an issue out of people trying to come to America for a better life. This time around the politicians in Washington have decided to pass a spending package that includes adding more people to the Border Patrol to chase "dangerous" immigrants coming into our nation to find a way to support their families. While our public schools go without adequate funding and our most vulnerable citizens struggle to survive Congress spends billions of dollars to keep us "safe" from undocumented workers.

Reducing illegal immigration will not solve the problems facing our nation. Our economy is not in shambles because of undocumented workers. Our economy is crumbling because the politicians in Washington and the state houses around the nation have let billionaires get away with not paying their fair share to support our society for decades. Even under the Clinton administration there was not enough done to keep the interests of the wealthy from running roughshod over the people of America. No matter who has been in charge since the days of Ronald Reagan the winners in the public policy debate have been the wealthy and the losers have been everyone else. To keep everyone else from paying too much attention to what they arenít doing to protect us they manufacture an issue with the immigration debate to focus our anger toward people that have done nothing to harm us.

The immigration debate is little more than political trickery to distract us from the real problems in our country. Any discussion of more or less border enforcement is meant to distract us from the real problems in America. Illegal immigration would be best solved by making legal immigration easier for people wanting to come to America. No amount of agents at the border is going to prevent either illegal immigration or terrorism. Determined people will find a way to get here no matter their intentions. If we want to solve the real problems in America we need to take money out of politics and stop blaming innocent people for our problems.

Putting More Agents On The Borders - Will It Reduce Illegal Immigration?: Right of Center View

Our Border Patrol agents have been given an impossible task. They have been asked to secure thousands of miles of borders with a minute fraction of the staff that they need to even patrol one of our borders. Budget cuts and putting pork barrel projects ahead of our nationís security have left our nation more vulnerable than it has ever been to invaders from all sides. While Congress is taking steps to increase funding for border security in an election year, years of inaction has led to a situation where the band-aid solution they are working on is completely inadequate to stem the tide of illegal immigrants coming into America.

The effort needed to turn back the flood of illegal immigrants is far beyond what any politician in Washington is willing to do. One of the things that has become crystal clear in the Democratic response to the Arizona immigration enforcement law that recently was signed by the governor is that they have no will to enforce our immigration laws. The administration has chosen to not only oppose the law but to challenge the law in court and attempt to have it struck down. There can be no doubt that the current administration and Democrat controlled Congress is not committed to border security at all. Their current effort to add agents to the border is little more than an election year attempt to gain more votes for their reelection campaigns.

If the politicians want to get serious about border security and reducing illegal immigration they will need to stop tying the hands of law enforcement and begin investing in the security of our nation. The additional border agents will do no good if they donít have the support from the justice department and local law enforcement. The Obama administration has supported sanctuary cities and opposed states trying to fill in the gaps in federal immigration enforcement. There have been no indications from President Obama or the Democrats that they have any intention of improving border security. As long as they are running things in Washington, no amount of new border agents is going to really make any difference.
