Can America Be The Leader In A 21st Century Global Economy?: Left of Center View

For several years Washington worshipped at the feet of Wall Street under the Bush administration. The result; economic disaster and our children stuck with the bill for bailing out companies that paid people millions to lose billions. Because our economy became too dependent on a few businesses we all lost.

If we want to be a world leader in the new global economy we need to bring responsibility back to business. With the Democrats in control in Washington there might be hope for sensible regulation of our financial markets. The deregulation people had their shot at it and it failed miserably. Our leaders repealed almost all of the laws that were put in place after the Great Depression to protect us from another massive crash. Big surprise that the economy went down in flames when business was left to regulate itself. Apparently they forgot about Enron and the S&L debacles of the past when they had the idea to give the henhouse keys to the foxes on Wall Street.

Business needs to make money but it needs to do so in a way that is both sustainable and responsible. We need companies to create jobs for our people and not sacrifice the good of the many for the good of the few as a rule. When we have executives making millions of dollars and getting huge bonuses while they are laying off workers itís bad for the economy. If we are going to have recovery people need to get back to work. Right now, business cuts workers first and trims fat last. The economy only works if people have jobs. It is time for Washington to step in, cap executive salaries and require executive accountability for the performance of the company. If the company loses money the executives should not receive bonuses that year and if it comes down to saving jobs or giving bonuses, jobs have to come first. If companies canít be responsible on their own government needs to protect the people and make sure they do the right thing.

America can only lead when her people are prosperous. For that to happen, the people need to be working. As long as big business is more focused on making the rich richer and does not concern itself with the needs of the average man, we will struggle economically. Like every other type of structure, physical or conceptual, our economy needs a strong base in order to function well. The workers are the base of the economy. For that base to be solid there needs to be a source of income for the workers and a relative surety that there will be some stability in the job market over time. A stable America cannot fail to lead.

Can America Be The Leader In A 21st Century Global Economy?: Right of Center View

Since World War Two America has been the economic standard for the world. We have led because we know that business needs to be free to find new and innovative ways to create wealth for our people. When business is allowed to be inventive and creative we lead the world. Unfortunately, some in Washington seem to think that business is the enemy of the people. Somehow they think we need to be protected from the people who are the source of the money we use to pay our bills and feed our kids.

Since the stock market correction and housing market decline began politicians in Washington have been crying foul and blaming business for all of the problems in the economy. Somehow the trillions of dollars in debt the federal government has saddled the American people with had nothing to do with our economic woes. Apparently increasing the cost of doing business by taxing the hell out of business did not affect businessesí decisions to move their businesses to other countries.

The truth of the matter is that American business is the solution to our economic crisis, not the cause. Because of the ever-changing regulatory landscape, businesses have had to become much more focused on making money in the short term because planning for the future is next to impossible in America. CEOs never know when Washington will decide that some currently legal manner of making money will suddenly become intolerable so they have to try to make as much money as they can as quickly as possible. They are not trying to screw up the economy. They are trying to make money while they can because every time you turn around some liberal is trying to make it illegal to make money. If we could just take Washington out of the equation we could get back to making money and creating the jobs we need to get America back on track.

America can lead in the 21st century global economy but we need to get Washington out of the business of running companies and trying to save people from themselves all the time. We need to stop the endless bailouts and quit spending piles of money on social experiments that never work so businesses can actually be profitable in America. We need to stop increasing taxes on business and begin looking at how privatization can be utilized to both create jobs and lessen our dependence on big government. For over half a century America led the economic world. We did that by letting business do business. If we want to lead in the future we need to tell the politicians to back off and let American business do what they do so well, make money.

A Legal Immigrantís Perspective

If you are not a Native American, you are an immigrant, so am I. I came legally to this country at the age of five with my parents who worked hard, paid taxes (even Jesus paid taxes), lived by the rules of this great nation and never took or accepted a penny from the government. We came seeking FREEDOM from a communist country. It was months before we were able to enter the US legally. I remember us getting medical exams, shots (small pox), background check, references, and going through numerous interviews once we arrived. I also remembered people coming to the US from all over the world who waited years since it was based on "Quotas". Read more...

Solving Our Immigration Problem

The major problem our country is facing with illegal immigrants today is because of the exploitation of these immigrants. We believe the solution to this problem is two-fold. First, we should allow more immigrants in this country to cut down on the number of illegal ones. Second, all immigrants should be educated about their rights at the expense of the government. Below, you will find an in-depth look at our suggested reforms.

Reforms for immigration limitations:

-New immigrants can't equal more than 1% of the US population in a given year (the population being from the last recorded census). That 1% will be further divided up to allow only a certain number of immigrants each month.
-Each country of origin for immigrants will be allowed a certain percentage of that 1%. No country could receive more than 10% of the total amount and no country can receive less than .1% of it. The left over percentage will be divided up between all countries as follows: Read more...

Do Elements Within the La Raza Movement Pose a Threat to America?

La Raza means literally ďThe RaceĒ in Spanish. The movement was formed in 1968 to promote the interests of the Mexican-American community. Like the NAACP and other affirmative-action minded organizations, La Raza has many members that are interested in being part of America and promoting equality for all Americans. The fundamental goals as stated by the movement are benign and represent the ideals of American diversity and cultural pride.

There is another movement affiliated with La Raza that has historically been more militant and still maintains documents within their organization that point to isolationistic views Read More

A Plan

The one major thing that seems to be lacking in the immigration debate is a real plan that addresses the legitimate concerns with illegal immigration. There are strong opinions on both sides and a lot of rhetoric but there isnít really any solid plan being promoted to address the illegal immigration issue in a way that is both fair and logical.

So, that being said here is my idea:Read More

Trucking Cross Borders

This is mainly a concern for the trucking business. If we allow these people to come into our country, bringing cargo that we in America have, and can supply, then we are saying that the American working people are not needed, and have lost all say to legally enforced DOT (Department of Transportation) laws.Read More
