What Affect Does Illegal Immigration Have On Poverty In America?: Left of Center View

Poverty in America is not a result of undocumented immigrants despite what some would have you believe. The majority of poverty if not all of it is a result of greed. The select few who have amassed great fortunes have found numerous ways of working the system so that the poor and working class end up giving up what little they have to make the rich even richer. Less than 5% of the population controls over 95% of the wealth and they donít like to share.

If the richest 5% gave up even 1/10 of their wealth for the betterment of the nation poverty could be wiped out in America with or without undocumented workers living here. The biggest source of American poverty is American greed. The rich do everything they can to acquire as much as possible without giving anything back. What little they do give to charity is only to keep them from paying taxes. True philanthropy in America is all but dead. The rich only give to promote their agendas or get tax write-offs.

The real tragedy in all of this is that the wealthy have become such masters of media and spin that theyíve convinced over half the population that trying to take any of their wealth from them goes against the principles our nation was founded on. A bigger crock of crap Iíve never heard. This country was founded on compromise and cooperation. Those in need were helped by those around them to get through tough times. Now, itís all about ďme and mineĒ.

Our Founding Fathers despised big business and it was in fact the preferential treatment of big business to the detriment of small businesses by the British government that was the straw that broke the camelís back and led to revolution. George Washington would never have approved of bailing out Wall Street. He also would not have voted to give tax breaks to corporations that ship American jobs overseas. Undocumented workers are not the problem. Greed and a government that has lost its way are the problem.

What Affect Does Illegal Immigration Have On Poverty In America?: Right of Center View

Well, if importing poor people is good for improving economic prosperity then illegal immigrants are great for America. It seems like a no-brainer to me that if you import people that live below the poverty line, poverty will only increase in America. With already too few jobs to go around the illegal immigrants depress wages even further by working under the table for below minimum wage and in the process take jobs away from poor Americans desperate for work.

Regardless of who you blame for the current state of the American economy bringing more impoverished people here is not going to help matters. American workers already have to compete with workers overseas who do the jobs for far less. The jobs that canít be exported should be available to Americans first but because of people willing to work for less than minimum wage they arenít getting those either. Illegal immigrants are desperate on multiple fronts which makes them even more willing to work for less than poor Americans.

The worst thing of all is that when those illegal immigrants do get the jobs they often send a good portion of what they earn back to families in other countries taking that money out of our economy, preventing further job creation through domestic spending. So not only are impoverished Americans denied work, they are denied the opportunity for future jobs because the money being earned by their illegal immigrant counterparts is not creating domestic jobs.

So I guess the short answer in the end is that illegal immigration makes poverty worse in America. There is a snowball effect that happens as more illegal immigrants take the few available jobs. The three pronged attack of lost jobs, depressed wages and reduction in domestic spending creates the perfect conditions for poverty to creep into the lives of more and more Americans. Unless somebody does something soon working your way from rags to riches will become something only read about in history books for Americans.
