Do Differing Immunization Standards Around The World Pose A Health Risk To Americans?: Left of Center View

Disease is the last predator un-conquered by humankind. We have pushed every other potential threat to ourselves to the brink of extinction, but we canít beat the common cold. This scares us, as well it should. Nature is balance, and by eliminating all other sources of population control, it seems only natural that the few remaining would strengthen relative to our advances to control them.

Viruses, bacteria, and other biological based threats to our well being, survive by evolving past our defenses. Every time we come up with a way to defeat a certain strand, if we donít eradicated it completely, it returns stronger than before. Penicillin when first invented was major breakthrough, it killed almost all bacteria it came up against while doing very little damage to the human host. But now years later we are seeing the emergence of super-bacteria and staph infections that require stronger and more advanced antibiotics to keep them in check. And though no one will admit it publicly, these new super bugs may have evolved past our ability to stop them.

What does this have to do with global immunization standards? The world is now a much smaller place and this plays into the strength of most bio-risks. When travel was much slower, sick people tended to not survive the journey, or at the very least arrived at their destinations with obvious symptoms of their affliction. But now that the Atlantic can be crossed in a matter of hours instead of months, the incubation period for most threats, allows the host to pass from one population center to the next with nobody realizing the spread is occurring until much, much later.

Politics aside there is a simple solution to all of this, immunize, or require proof of immunization prior to letting foreign nationals into the country. Rather than allowing this to become another ďhotĒ topic, there should also be government mandated immunization of all U.S. citizens. All the talking heads on television like to brag about how wealthy and powerful we are as a nation. It seems like we can afford a battery of shots for the children so that they can grow up healthy and strong.

So while there is no reason to panic just yet, there is reason to examine our current methods for dealing with infectious disease and other biological hazards. Most of these are fairly easy to stop and cure and this should be done wherever possible. This doesnít mean that the U.S. should bear the financial and logistical burden to go out and cure and clean up all potential risks. Safe drinking water for all should be a global priority, but again it is not something that we should have to shoulder alone, except here at home. Itís just crazy to think that here in the U.S. entire communities are still forced to exist in unsanitary situations. It is important to do what we can for others across the world, but it is even more important that we do what we can to help our own citizens. And in many ways working with world health organizations can help to accomplish this. Any disease that can be eradicated abroad, is one less that we have to worry about here at home.

Do Differing Immunization Standards Around The World Pose A Health Risk To Americans?: Right of Center View

Among the many threats facing America today is the threat of widespread epidemics. From travelers unknowingly spreading disease sitting on a plane to terrorists using their bodies as incubators for biological weapons we face an ever-increasing risk of catastrophic biological contamination events. To prepare ourselves we need to take steps to immunize all Americans and quarantine all international travelers whose immunization and current health status has not been verified prior to allowing them free access to our nation.

Part of the solution has to be to work with other world governments to make sure they meet American standards for immunization. We have a model that other nations can follow to improve the safety for their people and ours at the same time. We donít have to cure the world but we do need to make sure that governments around the world understand how important it is to immunize people against disease. In the long run it costs far less to immunize than to treat illness. Struggling economies can be better served by immunizing early to save money later on treatment when people become sick. It is a win-win for America and countries around the world.

Another part of the solution is better ability to screen for disease with people coming into the United States. The politically correct liberals will probably decry this as evil in some way but it seems only logical that we need to make sure people coming into the country are not spreading disease. We need to quarantine foreign visitors until we can make sure they are not carrying diseases that can harm our people. The differing standards for immunization that exist demand that we take steps to protect ourselves from disease of foreign origin. We have no way of knowing what someone coming from abroad may be carrying. Beyond that it is only a matter of time before some inventive terrorist injects themselves with some virus that can kill millions if let loose.

We have to understand that we are not safe even with all of our immunizations because other countries still have outbreaks of diseases that have long been considered non-issues in America. Diseases that are not even considered threats to American children are still problems elsewhere. We need to make sure that the diseases that have been eradicated here are wiped out around the world and we need to make sure that immunization standards become global. Sometimes America has to take the lead and show the world how to act. This is one of those cases. Our standards could save millions of lives around the world and keep our people safer.

The long and the short of it is that we are not safe as things are today. Our people are at risk from an invisible threat that can quickly grow out of control if not stopped early on. The people of America deserve to be safe. We need to have domestic standards set for proactive disease containment and international standards set for immunization against disease. Regardless of convenience issues for foreign travelers we need to be sure people coming into America are not putting our people at risk before we let them walk our streets. It is in fact a matter of life and death.

A Legal Immigrantís Perspective

If you are not a Native American, you are an immigrant, so am I. I came legally to this country at the age of five with my parents who worked hard, paid taxes (even Jesus paid taxes), lived by the rules of this great nation and never took or accepted a penny from the government. We came seeking FREEDOM from a communist country. It was months before we were able to enter the US legally. I remember us getting medical exams, shots (small pox), background check, references, and going through numerous interviews once we arrived. I also remembered people coming to the US from all over the world who waited years since it was based on "Quotas". Read more...

Solving Our Immigration Problem

The major problem our country is facing with illegal immigrants today is because of the exploitation of these immigrants. We believe the solution to this problem is two-fold. First, we should allow more immigrants in this country to cut down on the number of illegal ones. Second, all immigrants should be educated about their rights at the expense of the government. Below, you will find an in-depth look at our suggested reforms.

Reforms for immigration limitations:

-New immigrants can't equal more than 1% of the US population in a given year (the population being from the last recorded census). That 1% will be further divided up to allow only a certain number of immigrants each month.
-Each country of origin for immigrants will be allowed a certain percentage of that 1%. No country could receive more than 10% of the total amount and no country can receive less than .1% of it. The left over percentage will be divided up between all countries as follows: Read more...

Do Elements Within the La Raza Movement Pose a Threat to America?

La Raza means literally ďThe RaceĒ in Spanish. The movement was formed in 1968 to promote the interests of the Mexican-American community. Like the NAACP and other affirmative-action minded organizations, La Raza has many members that are interested in being part of America and promoting equality for all Americans. The fundamental goals as stated by the movement are benign and represent the ideals of American diversity and cultural pride.

There is another movement affiliated with La Raza that has historically been more militant and still maintains documents within their organization that point to isolationistic views Read More

A Plan

The one major thing that seems to be lacking in the immigration debate is a real plan that addresses the legitimate concerns with illegal immigration. There are strong opinions on both sides and a lot of rhetoric but there isnít really any solid plan being promoted to address the illegal immigration issue in a way that is both fair and logical.

So, that being said here is my idea:Read More

Trucking Cross Borders

This is mainly a concern for the trucking business. If we allow these people to come into our country, bringing cargo that we in America have, and can supply, then we are saying that the American working people are not needed, and have lost all say to legally enforced DOT (Department of Transportation) laws.Read More
