Are Democrats Cutting Off Their Noses To Spite Their Faces In Michigan And Florida?

With the announcement that four prominent Democratic candidates for president have withdrawn from the Michigan primary because of the Stateís decision to move their primary to January 15th in violation of DNC rules prohibiting States other than New Hampshire, Iowa, Nevada and South Carolina from holding primaries prior to February 5th it seems that some Democrats are more concerned with dictating rules to their Party than with the voters. Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton has refused to withdraw from the ballot as has Senator Christopher Dodd.

Spokespeople for both the Clinton and Dodd campaigns said that they will honor the Party policy to not campaign in these states for the primary but that they did not feel it was necessary to remove their names from the ballot.

Given that both Florida and Michigan defied Party rules but carry such weight in the general election, it may be a fight that the Party leaders ultimately lose by taking such a hard line with the Statesí primaries. If the people of the two electoral vote rich states decide that the Democratic Party Leaders care more about their power over the Party than the people within the Party it may open the door to the Republicans who have made no indications that they will avoid campaigning in any state in the nation for any period of time. So how will this impact the general election? If the people of Michigan feel slighted by Obama and Edwards during the primary election would they vote for them if they win the nomination? It seems strange that the candidates would put the will of the Party over the voice of the people in an election that is likely to be the precursor to a very tight general election.

This latest struggle for power between the states and the Democratic Party leadership seems to indicate a larger problem that may be arising for both major political parties in America. The Democrats being locked in a battle for control of the primaries and the Republicans being divided over the level of conservatism points to a level of division within the major parties that raises the question of the possibility of both parties being weakened to the point of third parties being a real possibility in areas where more contentious primary races are being run.

2008 may be the year to watch for a rise in the influence of the Independent candidate. With both Congress and the President doing abysmally in the polls, America may be ready to tell the would-be power brokers that itís had enough of business as usual in Washington. The true X-factor in this election may be the candidates like Michael Bloomberg who have declared their independence and made it clear that they have the means and will to go it alone on the campaign trail without any political party support if necessary.

White House Incompetence Strikes Again

The private intelligence company SITE has been a source of much of the intelligence our government has used to track down terrorist activity online over the last few years. Recently, they came into possession of an internet video that Al Qaeda was to release but had not yet. They obtained this video through the use of access they had to Al Qaedaís media wingís website that Al Qaeda was unaware of. They dutifully turned the information over to the White House with the express condition that it should not be released to the press before Al Qaeda released the video because it would alert Al Qaeda to the compromised security allowing intelligence gathering from their online infrastructure.

So what does the White House do? Of course, they leaked the video to the press and within hours it was all over the web. Given that information the next thing that happened should be no surprise. When SITE tried to access the information source that had provided so much valuable intelligence to our nation, it had been cut off. Al Qaeda now being aware of the security breach had taken steps to block access to the information. So after years of meticulous intelligence gathering to obtain a solid source of information and keep the terrorists unaware they were being surveilled, with one act of utter stupidity the White House completely wiped out their source of information.

Despite denials by the White House, the staff at SITE made it clear that the only possibility was a White House leak. They had not shared the information with anyone else. The incompetence of the current administration succeeded for Al Qaeda where their own counter intelligence had failed them. Whether it was leaked directly or proper instruction was not given to the intelligence departments in the transfer of the information, the White House which had taken possession of the materials is ultimately responsible for losing the American people a valuable intelligence asset in the effort to protect our people from terrorism.

Once again, the people we elect to protect us have shown their inability to act competently let alone make positive strides toward improving the safety and security of Americans. The blind, deaf, toothless guard dog that is the Bush administration has once again let the thief in the night slip away without stopping them and in this case helped the perpetrator get away with it.

How much longer can America survive under the imbecilic leadership of an administration that repeatedly demonstrates an utter inability to make sound decisions? This administration will pay billions to private security companies like Blackwater to kill innocent children in Iraq but will veto funding for low income American childrenís health care. Itís time for change to come and 2008 cannot come soon enough. As long as we are led by those who canít differentiate between a good and bad decision, we will be in danger of losing everything we hold dear to the likes of Osama bin Laden.
